The UAE criminalises this - start with that, not with anything else
This page exists to say one thing clearly before anything else on this site is read. In the United Arab Emirates, sex outside marriage and any commercial sexual activity are criminal offences for both parties. Penalties include imprisonment, fines and deportation for non-citizens, and enforcement extends into private settings. Nothing here should be read as suggesting otherwise.
The emirates are not identical in atmosphere - Dubai is not Sharjah, and Abu Dhabi is not either - but the criminal law is federal and the differences are of tone rather than of statute. Assuming that a more relaxed hotel bar implies a more relaxed legal position is the specific mistake that ends badly.
The risk criminalisation creates
Wherever an act is criminalised, the market around it stops being policed and starts being farmed. The dominant pattern in the Gulf is not theft or violence: it is extortion. A meeting arranged online, photographs or recordings made without consent, and a demand for payment afterwards. It works because the target cannot go to the police without incriminating himself, and everybody in that chain understands the arithmetic.
What verification is, and is not
Verified here means one thing, and it is the thing that goes wrong most: a face and body video review, watched by a person, before the profile went live. It is not a health certificate and it does not make an evening good, which is still your part. It removes the failure that starts almost every bad story, which is that the woman at the door was never the woman in the photographs.
What is still worth reading here
The health guide, which explains where testing is available in the Emirates and the one important local detail - that HIV testing is mandatory for residency and a positive result carries immigration consequences. And the safety guide, which describes the extortion pattern in detail, because recognising it is the single most useful thing on this site for anyone in this country.
